First By a
Breast
“First By a Breast” is an integrated breast cancer prophylaxis
programme created by Amberheart Breast Cancer Foundation (http://www.amberheart.net
) and effectuated in Poland by Prodiatera since 2001.
The program has two phases:
1. Training for midwives and nurses who have completed a breast
disease prophylaxis specialization courses:
-
breast cancer consultant course – an intensive thee day (28
hour) training course as well as an additional 16 hours of
practical training in the form of a breast cancer
prophylaxis breast-self examination teaching days for women
in the trainee’s town/region. A course completion
certificate is obtained after having provided signed proof
of having completed the prophylaxis days.

breast health instructor course – an intensive five day (37
hour) training course recommended for midwives and nurses
who have basic knowledge regarding breast cancer prophylaxis
and diagnosis (from breast health clinics, women’s clinics,
gynaecologist’s offices etc.) or after the breast consultant
course. This is a perfecting course, which increases
theoretical knowledge and practical skills of clinical
breast examination. Practice on silicon breast models and
peer examination. This course gives participants the skills
and certification to teach nurses, community nurses,
midwives and groups of women in breast self-examination, it
also gives them knowledge on how to coordinate and run
prophylaxis events in cooperation with women’s organisations
in participant’s town/region.
Both courses were certified in September 2004, as continuing
education skill enhancing courses, by The Nurse and Midwife
Post-Graduate Training Centre.

2. Teaching women countrywide proper Breast-Self Examination
techniques.
